LaBELLE - Paul

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Paul LaBelle of Red Deer, AB at 7:06 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, 2012 at the age of 70 years.

Paul was born in Thurso, Québec on February 1, 1942. He grew up in that area and all the years of his life he talked about and reminisced of the many good times he’d had with his paternal grandparents and had visions of the natural beauty of those little villages that he so loved.

After trade school, Paul went to work in the construction industry in various places. He was very ambitious and industrious.

On October 27, 1962, Paul married his favorite gal, Lily Kelly, who had moved to Thurso, Québec from Timmins, Ontario. After they were married one year, they moved to Thompson, Manitoba, where they spent 12 years…the first few in isolation. During those years, he built himself a great career and gained much respect from all whom he worked with and met socially. Paul was very driven and his main goal was to provide a very good living for his family. He was so so proud. By the time Paul left Thompson in 1975 to come to Red Deer, he had accomplished his dream of having his own construction company. Paul was very successful and so proud to have had the opportunity to hire, help and guide many young people.

Once in Red Deer, he felt a bit out of his element, but it wasn’t long before Paul got back into his groove and proceeded to build on his career in the construction field. He worked several years for Northside Construction and then spent the last 20 years of his career with PMCL. Paul was so so happy there. He officially retired in December 2011.

Paul: husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend was an honest, good-living person who was generous to a fault. One could always benefit from his good advice. Paul was a storyteller, was comical and he loved to talk. He will be greatly missed.

Paul loved his family and his many friends. He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 49 years, Lily; mother, Carmen Belisle, who is 91 years of age; daughters, Josée Hopkins (David) and Anne Tivey (David) of Calgary; son, Jean Paul (Catherine) of Oakland, California; grandchildren, Erin, James, Christine and Thomas Hopkins and Renée, Nicole and Isabella LaBelle; brothers, Jean Marc (Nicole) of Cheneville, Qué; and Pierre (Francyne) of Gatineau,Qué; sister, Lise Caron (Clément) of Notre Dame du Lau, Qué; his in-laws, Doris Morrissette (Léo), Doreen Blais, Norman Kelly (Agathe), Shirley Picard (Paul), Marlene Godin (George), Joyce Kelly (Richard), Gail Venneri (Sergio), Pat Donovan (David) and Colleen Francq (Michel); as well as many many friends, nieces and nephews.

Paul is predeceased by his father, Geovah LaBelle (1989).

Over the years, Paul and Lily travelled to many parts of the world and enjoyed the last couple of winters in their condo in Florida. He learned to golf late in his years and was so determined to master the game. Paul never liked to lose.

The last 16 months were a real struggle for Paul, battling cancer. His faith carried him through. He did not fear death. Paul trusted and knew that his family and friends would help him cross that bridge - these were his words in the last few days. He went peacefully surrounded by loved ones at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary.

A Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at Eventide Funeral Chapel, 4820 - 45 Street, Red Deer, Alberta.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 15, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 6 McMillan Avenue, Red Deer with the Reverend Father Les Drewicki presiding. Interment will follow at Alto Reste Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Paul’s honor may be made directly to Cancer Research or a charity of one’s choice.
