Peters, Beatrix Grace (Betty)
December 6, 1924 - August 21, 2016
Beatrix Grace (Betty) Peters (Herbert), beloved wife of John Robert Peters of Delburne, Alberta passed away at the her home at Michener Extendicare, Red Deer, Alberta on August 21, 2016 at the age of 91 years. She was the loving mother of Dariel and Mel McNaughton of Rumsey, Alberta, Roger and Brenda Peters of Red Deer, Alberta, Harold and Diana Peters of Halkirk, Alberta, Beth and George Magyar of Elnora, Alberta and Tracy and Janet Peters of Delburne, Alberta. She will also be dearly missed by her 15 grandchildren, and 32 great grandchildren and a very special friend, Sandie Olsen. She will be lovingly remembered by her 2 sisters, Peggy Yewell of Kelowna, BC and Dorothy McLean of Stettler, Alberta.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Peters and Great grandson Niall Peters, her mother and father, Reginald and Gertrude Herbert, 2 brothers, Bruce and Richard (Dick) Herbert and sister Annabelle Herbert.
Mom was born on the farm near Delburne to Reginald and Gertrude Herbert, second youngest of 6 children. She grew up on the farm in the Service/Woodlake districts. She attended school at the Service School and finished her high school in Elnora. In 1944, she married John Peters of the Woodlake district living on their farm for the next 60 plus years. Together they raised a family of 5 kids. Mom worked as hard as any man doing chores, fieldwork and milking cows to help put the food on the table for the family and many friends who visited often. She could milk a cow, pluck a chicken and pick berries faster than the speed of light. After Dads untimely death 44 years ago, she decided to give up milking her cows and took a job at the Elnora Hospital as a Nurses Aid for 18 years until retirement. She loved her horses, her dogs and her motorhome and at age 75 took 3 friends with her and drove to Alaska, a 5000 mile trip. Her favorite hobby was driving to the Delburne Hotel every morning to have coffee with friends. Lord help someone who sat in “her table” before she arrived. After an incident one cold snowy winter morning she decided to sell her farm and move to Delburne so it would be easier to get to coffee in the mornings.
Her home, both on the farm and in town, was a gathering place for her large family and many a delicious meal and happy memories were shared there around her huge oak kitchen table. She loved to see the grandkids and great grandkids and always had special treats cooked up for them (or anyone else who came to visit). She was a true blue Oilers and Blue Jays fan and watched almost every game that was televised. Don’t call Gramma when the game was on or you only had a one sided conversation. She loved to play bingo and crib and had hers and your hand counted as the last card was played.
Five years ago she moved to Michener Extendicare after a hip operation ended her driving career. Here she made many dear friends. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
MEMORIAL DONATIONS In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to STARS in Betty’s name or any charity of the donor’s choice. A CELEBRATION OF Betty’s LIFE will be held at the Delburne Community Hall, Delburne, Alberta on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 2 pm.
