HEIGHINGTON, Edna Euphemia
May 16, 1918 – June 21, 2015

Edna Euphemia Heighington passed away peacefully in Red Deer at the age of 97 years. Edna was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Oliver James Heighington, brothers; Alan, Ivan, Tommy, Lloyd, and Murray, sisters; Fanny and Mary, daughter, Irene, and grandson, Kent. Left to mourn are her sons; Keith (Marilyn), Dale (Evelyn), and Larry (Maureen), as well as grandchildren; Lea, Derek, Koryn (Gordie), Vincent (Sherry), Janice (Dan), Lori, Desmond, and her great-grandchildren; Alexandra, Rebecca, Jillian, Ashely, Brandon, Matthew, and Heather.

Edna was born in Whitewood, Saskatchewan. Her mom passed away at a young age so Edna took the role of caregiver to her dad and siblings. This is a role that she loved and carried forward her entire life with her family and everyone she met. When she was 18 years of age, she traveled across Canada to Victoria, British Columbia, to become a nanny first, then worked as a dietician in Victoria General Hospital. This is where she met her husband, Oliver, who was serving in the army. Years later, they moved to Calgary where they had a general store. After having their first son, they decided to settle down and buy a farm in the Breton area. They moved to Red Deer in the 1980’s. Throughout her life, Edna spent many hours volunteering for her local Elks Club and Ladies Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid bowler and won numerous trophies. Edna had the luck of the Irish! If she wasn’t winning at bingo, she was winning the meat draw at her favorite table in the Legion surrounded by friends and family. As lucky as she was, she didn’t get a 29 hand in cribbage until she was 96 years of age. Edna will be sorely missed by all those who knew her and whose lives she touched.

Special thanks to the staff at Bethany CollegeSide for taking such good care of her during her stay there.

A Funeral Service will be held at Eventide Funeral Chapel, 4820-45 Street, Red Deer, on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 1:00 p.m.

Memorial tributes in Edna’s honour may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 202, 5913-50 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 4C4.
