Elsie Aileen Boomer was born January 14th, 1932 at Boomer Corner near Joffre, Alberta. She was the 7th of eight children. She passed away September 28th, 2016 in the East Cottage of the West Park Lodge in Red Deer, where she received exceptional care.

Aileen was raised in Red Deer by a single parent. Her father passed away when she was 3 years old, & her mother was determined to keep the family together. She impressed on her children that they could never get into any trouble because they could be taken away. Her children never got into trouble (outside of the house) &, in fact, Aileen had very happy memories of her childhood, always speaking with great affection of her sister & brothers, & saying how they always stuck together & supported each other through good times & bad.

Aileen worked various jobs, including waitressing & at P.T.S., which is now Michener Centre. She saved her money to become a teacher. Aileen got her Teacher's Certificate from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, then taught school near Lac La Biche for the school year 1951-52. The school had one room with students ranging from Grade 1 through Grade 8.

Aileen married Donald Smethurst, whom she had known for most of her life, & who was a good friend of her brothers. He was a boarder in her family home for several years. They were married July 26th, 1952.

Aileen became an activist for the North Red Deer Community, & was on the board instrumental in getting the Northside Community Association up & running, & getting the community centre, skating rink & tennis courts built. She spent much of her

time driving her children to baseball games, hockey games, swimming events & gymnastics. She also spent hours of her time leading up to Christmas sewing Barbie doll clothes. Her passion was playing bingo. She spent her free time knitting & crocheting.

The family spent many summers living in a trailer in a dusty field because Aileen did not want to be away from her husband, & have him away from her & their family.

Don & Aileen had five children: Tom, who passed away in 2012. Vivian Jean, who died shortly after birth. Susan (Dave) Kennedy, Duane & Raeann, who was known as her "Centennial Project". Aileen leaves behind 11 grandchildren & 11 great-grandchildren. She is now with her husband, Don, who passed away on September 23rd, 2009. She was predeceased by her brothers Chesley,

Leonard, Gerald & Harry, & is survived by her sister Vivian, & brothers Allan & Darl.

We would especially like to thank Darl & Lynette for their many visits with Aileen. She always valued the time they spent with her, & were so wonderful to us as we dealt with her illness over the years.
