Marlene Patricia Edel (nee Cole) 1949 – 2015

It is with both joy and sadness that Marlene’s earthly journey has come to an end. She passed away suddenly at the Red Deer Hospital on May 6, 2015. Marlene will be lovingly remembered by her sons Christopher (Carmen), Kelly and Cameron (Lisa) along with her precious grandchildren Brody, Trenton, Kaylee, Blake and Mathew. She will be especially missed by Caddy, her beloved canine companion. Marlene was predeceased by her husband, Larry in 2010, parents, Peter and Marion Cole, parents-in-law, Harold and Lily Edel, and sister-in-law Lorraine Arndt. She is survived by her brothers, Pat (Danuta) of Campbell River, BC, Willy (Edelean) of Regina, SK, and Ted (Bev) of Anola, MB, her in-laws, Ed Arndt of Virden, MB, Brenda Yakimishyn (Wayne) of Exshaw, AB, and David (Debbie) of Kelowna, BC, along with numerous nephews and nieces.
Marlene was raised on a hobby farm in East Selkirk, MB, where she developed a passion for animals. She often spoke lovingly about her many pets especially Shorty, the family horse. She excelled in both athletics and academics through her school years. Following her graduation from Selkirk Collegiate in 1967, her passion for learning and children led her to the University of Winnipeg where she earned her teaching certificate. Her first teaching assignment took her to Snow Lake, MB to teach kindergarten. There she found Larry, the love of her life, and they married in 1971. The North became home raising their three boys in Flin Flon, MB and Whitehorse, YT. Marlene’s formal teaching career was kept short as she focused her efforts on family. Community however remained important to her and she volunteered for numerous youth groups including bowling, volleyball, minor fastball and competitive swimming. When her boys got older, she worked part time for the Flin Flon School Division as a Substitute Teacher / Truancy Officer and later Secretary for the Creighton & District Bingo Association.
Retiring to Sylvan Lake, AB in 1997 saw Marlene rekindle her passion to cook, bake and garden. Retirement did not last long as her desire to help people drew her back into the workforce. She joined H&R Block in Lacombe where she worked as a Tax Consultant/Bookkeeper until December of 2014.
A celebration of Marlene’s life will be held on Friday, May 15, 2015 at Eventide Funeral Chapel 4820-45 Street Red Deer at 1:00 P.M. with interment to follow at the Sylvan Lake Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made in Marlene's name to the Red Deer & District SPCA, 4505 77 Street, Red Deer AB, T4P 2J1 (www.reddeerspca.com), the United Way of Central Alberta (www.caunitedway.ca) or a charity of your choice.
