Fletcher, Richard John “Jack”
February 19, 1921 – July 15, 2015

Richard John Fletcher was born February 19, 1921. He was adopted by loving parents Lewis and Lilian Fletcher in the spring of 1922. Known as “RJ” or Jack to his friends and family, Jack grew up in Saskatchewan. From a young age Jack developed a strong work ethic that would follow him through the years. He spent time in his younger years working on the railroad. Over time, Jack also learned the value and importance of family and filling his life full of love.

Jack met Hazel Jefferies when he was in his late twenties, and being partial to blondes, and ready to settle down and begin a family of his own, Jack and Hazel wed on July 15, 1950 in Prairiedale, Saskatchewan. The two of them called Fletcher Acres home for many years, a farm site just outside of Major, Saskatchewan. Jack and Hazel spent many years on the family farm where they raised their children, and Jack shared the ups and downs and lifestyle of being a farmer with his son. Jack and Hazel were blessed to have four children; eldest child Larry, twins Cheryl and Shelley, and youngest child Karen. All four children would marry and have children of their own. The grandchildren (and eventual great grandchildren) certainly held the most special place in Jack and Hazel’s hearts. There need not be any reason to have a get together with the family……Jack immensely enjoyed all of his family time and looked forward to any time he had with his children and grandchildren.

Jack had so much to teach all of us. He was a knowledgeable farmer, woodworker, carpenter and even a horticulturalist. Still his daughters talk about all of the tips and words of advice Jack had about making rose bushes flourish and his flowers and shrubs bountiful. He was a reliable neighbour, dedicated family man and father, and a devoted husband.

Hazel and Jack moved to Camrose in 1985…sad to say good bye to the farm but ready for a new chapter in their lives. In Camrose Jack kept himself busy with his garden and flowers and shrubs, as a member of the Lions club, and a shuttle driver for a car dealership. Many birthday parties, holidays and Christmases were celebrated in their home in Camrose.

Jack and Hazel made many friends in their 65 years of marriage. Their last place of settlement together in Lacombe, where they moved in 2001, would be the place where Jack would say good bye to his family and friends. Again, they purely enjoyed the company of their loved ones, and they enjoyed their time together. There was never a dull moment…..the constant banter back and forth between Jack and Hazel will be so missed. There will be a silence and a void that will never be filled again. Imagine having a companion, friend, partner for 65 years—the joy, happiness, tears, love and laughs that were shared—what a privilege; what an amazing experience.

We have been so blessed to have Jack in our lives as a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. It is a rarity to be able to celebrate a 65th wedding anniversary. It is rare for there to be such a true love that exists between two people…..and we are so lucky to have been able to see this and experience this and to have a relationship with a truly great man. A man like no other.

Richard John Fletcher passed away peacefully on July 15, 2015 in the company of his family. He was predeceased by his granddaughter Dorinda and his son in law Dale Koch (married to Karen). He leaves behind his lovely wife Hazel, children Larry (Diane and family), Cheryl (Ken Zunti and family), Shelley (Alex Beier and family), and Karen (and family), his beautiful grand and great grandchildren and numerous other friends and extended family. He will be missed and loved forever. We are now lucky to have him as our guardian angel in heaven.

Funeral services will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 5226-51st Avenue, Lacombe, Alberta on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made directly to The Children’s Wish Foundation, 4-10016 29A Avenue, NW, Edmonton, Alberta, T6N 1A8 or STARS, Calgary Base-Head Office, 1441 Aviation Park NE, Box 570, Calgary, Alberta, T2E 8M7.
