Wilma Zemanek
November 3, 1927 - October 19, 2014
ZEMANEK, Wilma Josephine
1927 - 2014
There are no words to express our deep sorrow in the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Wilma. Wilma died peacefully at the Red Deer Hospice on Sunday evening, October 19, 2014 at the age of 86 years, shortly after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She was born in Pitin, Czechoslovakia and immigrated to Canada with her parents at the age of 2. Wilma was fluent in English & Czech and served as an interpreter welcoming Czech immigrants to the Red Deer area. She was a courageous, gentle soul who raised eight children. Her unwavering Christian faith, and unconditional love for her children, was her rock during difficult times. She was our mentor and inspiration. For that we will be eternally grateful. Wilma also embraced nature and “adopted” as her pets a doe deer and her twin fawns that frequently grazed below her apartment balcony. She always had her camera ready to snap a picture, and eagerly shared her photos to anyone who came to visit. She was a member of the CWL for 15 years. Wilma is survived by her children: Mary (Mac) Aunger, Rick (Barb) Zemanek, Jim Zemanek, Joanne Nolan, Christine Zemanek, Michael (Angie) Zemanek, and Caroline (Arnold) Zemanek-Baker; twenty-four grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by brother, Joe, and sister, Helen. Wilma was predeceased by her husband, Joseph (1969) and oldest son, John (1995), her parents and her four brothers. A Prayer Service for Wilma will be held at Eventide Funeral Chapel, 4820-45 Street, Red Deer on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 6 McMillan Avenue, Red Deer, on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wilma’s honour may be made directly to the Red Deer Hospice Society, 99 Arnot Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta, T4R 3S6 or www.reddeerhospice.com.
